"An almost forgotten early New Zealand battle and the exploits of one of its heroes is recalled by Arden Jennings. Little is said or written of wars last century. They seem to have faded away. But among the tales that deserve to be told is that of Ensign Edward McKenna, VC (1830-1908). He came to new |Zealand with the 65th Regiment in 1846 as a non-commissioned officer. He served through the Land Wars and was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery at Tuakau and at the same time commissioned in the field. he retired in 1867 from the Army but in 1866 fought with Major Von Tempsky's Forest Rangers for a short while. he died at Palmerston North on June 8, 1908."
