News media in settler societies such as New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the USA masks the dominant culture, ensuring it is not recognised as a culture that makes its practices and institutions the norm. News media also marginalise the culture of indigenous peoples and minority ethnic groups and disparage them as peoples. This makes it difficult for nurses to ensure their work with Maori is culturally safe.
