This paper was first presented in Adelaide at the Australian Congress of Mental Health Nurses Twelfth National Convention, September 1986. The presentations, which involved nine people, followed traditional Maori protocol illustrating i practice the dynamic quality of the concepts contained within the paper and the title. This paper is dedicated to John Wilson, Charge Nurse, Whai-ora, Tokanui Hospital who was tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident (16/9/86).
