Anti-Māori themes in New Zealand journalism - toward alternative practice

Year:

2012

Much of this article is summarised in the pages of alternatives to anti-Māori themes. The article also discusses a theme about the Treaty of Waitangi, which portrays it as a historical document only, divisive rather than inspirational, blocking development but otherwise with little relevance. The central assumption in this theme is that Pākehā are entitled to determine the worth and meaning of the Treaty on their own, and that Māori views don't count. The article challenges media producers and Pākehā audiences to tell and read the news differently, to represent Māori more fairly and our society more honestly.
