Māori business news in the mass media

Description

Newspaper stories about Maori business items made up less than three percent (25) of all news items in a representative sample (compared with 50 stories about Maori in sport and 100 about Maori related to crime). Most newspapers had no items about Māori business. While most stories were about positive achievements, largely in primary industries, stories also implied that Māori have unwarranted and unfair rights due to Treaty settlements or land ownership; that Maori identity undermines national cohesion; and that Maori are either good (fitting in) or bad (failing). The stories never mentioned the colonial asset stripping from Māori communities.
